The Falco Archive
Shortly after Louis Falco's death in March 1993, Alan Sener, Mr. Falco's long-time choreographic assistant and a former principal dancer with the Louis Falco Dance Company, began serving as the dance archivist for the Falco estate.
At the University of Iowa, where he serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Dance, Alan Sener supervised undergraduate and graduate students through courses of study in which Falco materials on paper were preserved, organized and cataloged.
Working in conjunction with the Dance Collection of the New York Public Library For The Performing Arts, the documentation and preservation of existing film, video and audio recordings of Louis Falco's career as a dancer and choreographer is well underway.
As part of its mission, The Louis Falco Dance Project, Inc.a newly-formed, nonprofit, tax-exempt foundationwas created to help facilitate this archiving process.
In addition to the video and audio collection, The Falco Archive currently contains more than 80 boxes of press clippings, performance programs, posters, tour itineraries, publicity materials, contracts, correspondence, Mr. Falco's choreography notebooks, business agendas, produced and unproduced scripts and project proposals, storyboards for film and television, trophies, awards and other dance memorabilia.
The Archive also encompasses an extensive collection of dance photography, including over 3200 prints and over 300 color slides documenting Louis Falco's career in dance.
The Falco Archive is currently housed in New York City. Some archived materials such as videos, printed materials, audio recordings and photographs may be accessed through the Dance Collection of The New York Public Library For The Performing Arts at Lincoln Center.
The Falco Archive offers a great wealth of historic, dance-related information yet to be revealed through any significant publication. In preparation for writing a biography of Louis Falco, Mr. Sener has conducted a total of 232 interviews and has made research visits to 12 archives in five countries.
